The Boxing Federation of Kenya has elevated women’s national boxing league from token exhibition acts to a point-earning competition.
BFK Secretary-General David Munuhe said at the end of this season, the points tally will decide the women’s league champions.
Female fighters previously stepped into the ring only for uncounted fights with no points gained.
Women now command their own official standings and points tally which will officially determine the ultimate women’s league champions.
Every punch thrown, every round won, and every bout secured now carries official weight.
This new development has raised the bar in women’s participation in the league. Boxing clubs across Kenya now have reason to scout, sign, and support female fighters. More women in the ring means more points for the club and fierce competition.
Ring action is about to get much tougher. Higher competition will naturally unearth fresh, raw talent. This fills the pipeline for the national team nicknamed Hit Squad.
By creating an equal playing field, the BFK isn’t just changing the rules. They are enhancing the future of women’s boxing in the East African nation acclaimed for its boxing prowess, producing the first-ever black African, Robert Wangila, to win an Olympic gold medal at the 1988 Seoul Olympics.
