ALLOTEY: IBA PURSE WAS MY RICHEST PAY DAY IN PRO BOXING

The Ghanaian star boxer was paid $5000 in the International Boxing Association Africa flyweight title fight in Addis Ababa

Ghana’s renowned boxer, Theo Allotey, may have clinched the WBO Africa bantamweight title but he’s frank to disclose what he earned was less than what he was paid when he lost to Zambia’s Patrick “Baddo” Chinyemba in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in 2024.

Allotey, a bronze medallist at the African Games in Accra, went down to Chinyemba via a fourth round KO in an International Boxing Association (IBA) Africa flyweight title fight.

“IBA purse was higher than what I earned when I fought with Gorsh,” Allotey told boxersworld.co.ke.

“I felt great receiving the IBA cash because it was my first big payment and the highest ever so far, they really made my day,” says Allotey.

Against Chinyemba, Allotey pocketed $5000 but he did not reveal how much he was paid against Gorsh whom he decisioned 117-111, 118-110, 118-110

The contrast in payment shows the International Boxing Association’s purse is fatter and is a testament to the meagre income of most of African boxers plying their trade in the continent. Some of them are just paid a pittance but they say something is better than nothing at all.

Sweet victory indeed for Allotey

Allotey remained non-committal on the state of Africa pro boxing and the low payment accrued in the bare-chested game in Africa.

In addition to dethroning Gorsh to win the WBO Africa flyweight title on June 13, 2025, at the iconic Bukom Arena, Allotey also avenged the points defeat he suffered to Gorsh in 2017 in an amateur boxing tournament.

“I feel good, a little bit happy because that’s not my dream or target,” says Allotey on his victory over Gorsh.

“My target in pro boxing is to become a world champion, and also an undisputed champion.”

On his deserved win over Gorsh, Allotey says:”Gorsh is good but I’m the best, he’s a fighter, and I’m a boxer and that’s what made the difference on June 13, I also avoided to play his game.”

Allotey is now planning to move up to super-flyweight.

The winner is Allotey!

“I don’t feel strong in flyweight but I feel good and more comfortable in super-flyweight and I can also punch harder “
