Six more African boxers punched their tickets to the Commonwealth Games quarter-finals in the opening session, though five others were sent packing to bring the continent’s total eliminations to 27.
With 29 African fighters now locked into the last eight, more are expected to join the pack during the final Round of 16 evening session.
Long-serving Mauritian light-middleweight Merven Clair, a gold medallist at the 2019 African Games, led the charge to the elite eight, dominating Tuvalu’s Pason Taafaki in a flawless 5-0 points victory. Clair now advances to a tough Wednesday quarter-final against Ghana’s Precious Netty, who booked his spot by dismantling Elijah Qiokata of Fiji.
The continent’s dominance continued across the weight classes: Botswana’s Treasure Moremi squeezed a 3-2 win over Lesotho’s Toka Litabe, Refiloe Thai (Lesotho) outclassed Seychelles’ Lorenzo Bonne in a 5-0 light-middleweight shutout, Ghanas Precious Netty saw off Fiji’s Elijah Qiokata stopping him in one minute 17 seconds of the second round in a one-sided light-middleweight encounter, Jade Micock (Seychelles) ignited the light-heavyweight division, extinguishing Northern Ireland’s Eoghan Quinn 4-1, Desmond Pappoe (Ghana) closed the session in dramatic fashion, digging deep to edge Tonga’s Josh Tonga via a razor-thin 3-2 split decision.
In addition to Seychelles’ Lorenzo Bonne, other four African boxers shown the door in the first session are Ghana’s female flyweight Rematu Quaye, beaten 5-0 by Canada’s Amber-Jane Wall, Ghana’s lightweight Ebenezer Ankrah lost 3-2 to Scotland’s Nicholas Devlin, Mauritius’ lightweight Niven Chemben beaten 5-0 by Owain Harris-Allan of Wales and Lesotho’s lightweight Toka Litabe.
