Ghana’s Amadu Mohammed and Lesotho’s Pooana Khoahli have officially punched their way into the Commonwealth Games boxing semi-finals, guaranteeing at least two medals for the continent.
In tournament boxing, reaching the final four ensures a bronze at minimum. Win or lose from here, both fighters already have a medal in the bag, underlining Africa’s fierce determination to dominate on the global stage.
Amadu, the reigning bantamweight gold medallist from the 2023 African Games in Accra, showed precision to eliminate England’s Ellis Trowbridge. Meanwhile, in the welterweight division, Pooana outclassed Mauritius’ Ziggy Agathe in an emphatic 5-0 victory.
The victories provided a massive lift for the African contingent following an earlier heartbreak. High expectations had rested on Kenya’s female bantamweight Rosemarion Otieno to become the first African boxer to break into the semi-finals. However, despite a valiant effort, Otieno fell in a tough 4-1 decision to Canada’s Marie Bathoul. With Otieno’s departure, Amadu and Pooana completely answered the call. They carried the continent’s hopes into the ring and proved that African boxing is ready to take over Glasgow.
Ghana’s heavyweight Jibril Muntari was no match for Northern Ireland’s Garyn McAllister who hammered him 5-0.
