Breaking news!!! BIG CHEERS!! FOR AFRICA AS DJIBRIL TRAORE ENDS 8-YEAR MEDAL DROUGHT

Mali’s Djibril Traore ended Africa’s eight-year medal drought by punching his way to the semi-finals of IBA Men’s World Boxing Championships in Dubai on Wednesday, December 10, 2025.

The stocky Traore, a bronze medallist at the 2024 African Championships, engaged Spain’s Sergio Martinez in a toe-to-toe phonebooth exchanges to win the middleweight quarter-final bout via a unanimous decision .

Traore moves to the $75,000 semi-final stage and has also ended Africa’s eight-year medal drought in this competition.

Cameroon’s super-heavyweight Arsene Fokou Fosso, now fighting as a pro boxer in Australia, was the last African boxer to win a medal – bronze – in this prestigious tournament at the 2017 Men’s World Boxing Championships in Hamburg, Germany.
