The Boxing Federation of Kenya’s (BFK) Ndondi Mashinani grassroots initiative is transforming the sport by unearthing and nurturing a fresh generation of junior and youth boxers.

This talent pipeline serves as a vital feeder for the national team, and some of its most promising young pugilists will be paraded in the finals of the second leg of the Kenya National Boxing League in Mombasa, running from July 9-11.

It is indeed a grassroots revolution watching several junior and youth boxers emerging from the Ndondi Mashinani initiative.

Among the fresh talent includes Africa Youth Games bronze medallists, flyweight Clinton “Canelo” Omondi and light-welterweight Sonia Atieno who has held the national and intermediate titles. Sonia, Ellah Demesi, Phelix Ochieng and Brian Agunda represented the national youth team in the World Boxing U19 Futures Cup in Bangkok, Thailand, from March 6 to 16, 2026. It was hosted at the Indoor Stadium Huamark as an official qualifier for the Youth Olympic Games in Senegal later this year Other promising juniors are Lamu’s fighting machine Hilal “The Tornado” Mohammed, Alvin Otieno, Pintos Omondi and 10-year-old pupil at Mathare North Primary Kallah Said aka Gaddafi, the reigning Nairobi boys 26-27kg champion.

Kallah Said aka Gaddafi is known for his masterclass uppercut

Gaddafi’s impressive show including a masterclass uppercut during the 2025 Nairobi Junior Championships caught the eye of Kenya’s national team head coach Musa Benjamin, former internationals Kenneth “Valdez” Ochieng, Morris “Kawata” Maina and David Kiilu.

BFK’s objective of integrating promising junior and youth boxers directly into the national league’s main fight cards is to expose them to high-level, competitive pressure early in their careers, giving them more ring time and a chance to display their talent before the elite members of the national team who will in turn meet them and share feedback on their boxing approach.

For rising stars like Ellah Demesi, the Mombasa leg represents a critical milestone. Demesi, whose role model is Zone 3 champion Veronica Mbithe, has been turning heads in the youth categories, combining disciplined footwork with relentless aggression from his southpaw stance. Parading her on such a prominent stage—in front of both seasoned national coaches and passionate fans—is part of BFK’s long-term vision to build a formidable pipeline of talent destined for future African Elite and World Championships including Olympic qualifiers. The Mombasa contest will also offer Demesi a golden chance to meet with her idol Mbithe and get tips from the KDF Corporal.

The July 9–11 event will act as a bridge between foundational grassroots boxing and the elite ranks.

Upcoming fighters will share the same roster as national team heavyweights, offering a rare opportunity for these youngsters to learn fight discipline and psychological preparation firsthand.

BFK’s selectors will be closely monitoring the youth divisions to identify the next generation of “The Hit Squad,” Kenya’s national boxing team.

This initiative has also been a boon for institutional teams like the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), Kenya Police and Prisons who recruit the fresh talent from across the country mainly Nairobi, Mombasa, Nakuru and Kisumu. The Ndondi Mashinani (“Boxing at the Grassroots” in Swahili) initiative was launched to target disadvantaged neighborhoods and local communities to provide the youth with structure, socio-economic opportunities and a path off the streets. By bringing equipment, empowering the coaches through courses and localized tournaments directly to the grassroots level, BFK has unlocked a wealth of hidden talent.

The initiative has gained massive momentum, successfully collaborating with local county associations and international partners to discover young stars who are looking forward to make their mark on the national stage.

The Mombasa showdown represents this developmental journey for these junior and youth discoveries.

Among some of the bouts expected to thrill Coast fans is a rematch between Hilal Mohammed and Alvin Otieno.

Mombasa fans should brace up for an exciting three days of non-stop action. It’s massive! Don’t miss this mouth-watering Mixed Grill show.
