BIG RIFT IN AFRICA BOXING WITH TWO PRESIDENTS IN CHARGE.

Berhanu(r) and Liyoyo (l)

A simmering wrangle in Africa boxing exploded in Dubai with DR Congo’s federation president Ferdinand Ilunga Luyoyo’s faction boycotting the Africa Boxing Confederation (AFBC) Congress because they don’t recognize the constitutionally-elected President Eyassu Berhanu.

While Berhanu has dismissed Luyoyo as a rouble rouser and made it clear he’s imposing himself in power, Luyoyo insists he’s the bona fide AFBC president following a meeting held in Kinshasa in October in which they passed a vote of no confidence on Berhanu’s leadership accusing the Ethiopian of, among other things, dividing AFBC members, failure to implement his election promises, inaccessibility and imposing leaders on national federations.

International Boxing Associating (IBA), reacting to Luyoyo’s “coup” in Kinshasa during the AFBC African Men’s and Women’s Championships, dismissed the meeting as unconstitutional and said Berhanu remains the constitutionally-elected president of AFBC. In his line-up, Luyoyo has Moroccan Zoubida Wissam and Tanzania’s Lukelo Anderson Willilo as his vice president and Cameroon’s Andre Basile Kalong as the secretary-general.

Basile served in the same capacity under the ousted president Bertram Mendouga who was removed by the BoD during last year’s Africa Championships. He was accused of high-handedness and financial impropriety including “eating” prize money of boxers from Zambia, Mozambique and Algeria which had unofficially joined World Boxing.

The big rift in AFBC has also spread to the Board of Directors. BoD members allied to Berhanu are Botswana’s Irene Ntelemo who is also the head of the inactive AFBC’s women’s diversity commission, Eswatini’s federation president Webster Lukhele, South Africa National Boxing Organisation president Siyabulela Mkwalo and Awil Gele, the vice president of Somali Boxing Federation.

General Luyoyo’s loyalists in the BoD are Boxing Federation of Tanzania president Lukelo Willilo, Morocco’s federation secretary-general Zoubida Wissam, Senegal Boxing Federation secretary-general Anta Gueye and Burundi Boxing Federation president Eric Ndayishimie. Vocal Angolan David Pina, who has been reinstated as Ethics Commission chairman, is with the Luyoyo team while former AFBC acting president Azania Omo-Agene and Niger’s ousted president Issoufou Abdou Malam are Berhanu’s sympathisers. Malam insists he’s still the head of the Niger federation, an assertion backed by Guinea’s president Alpha Amadou Balde who has been accused by the Luyoyo faction of leading Berhanu to the ditch as his adviser not to mention arrogantly dismissing a suspension slapped on him by the disciplinary committee, allegations the Guinean senior military officer has treated with the contempt they deserve.

Azania had fallen out with AFBC president Berhanu following his suspension by the Berhanu regime but they have since mended fences, and now the towering Nigerian is Berhanu’s avid supporter, consistently shouting from the rooftop about Berhanu’s achievements as the leader of the African body and belittling Luyoyo’s faction as power-hungry non-achievers whom he has advised to wait for the 2026 AFBC elections to remove Berhanu from power through the ballot and not through their illegal meeting they held in Kinshasa

The rift in the beleaguered African body further escalated at the IBA Congress in Dubai when the current Cameroon Boxing Federation president Professor Binyam Pierre Rene and Angola’s federation president Simao Muanda – allegedly installed to power by Berhanu according to the rebel hardliners of Luyoyo – were barred from attending the Congress. They stood outside hurling vitriolic attacks at their perceived enemies on what had transpired.

A furious Rene said Andre Basile Kalong ceased to be the secretary general of the Cameroonian federation and therefore he was not supposed to be a delegate at the IBA Congress. The Cameroon federation president told boxersworld.co.ke that Basile has been declared persona non-grata in Cameroon and that’s why he has now relocated to DR Congo under the patronage of General Luyoyo.

Contacted, Basile laughed off Rene’s allegations, describing him as a desperate person dreaming of being the president of the Cameroon Federation.

“The man was elected in a fake roadside meeting, he’s Berhanu’s stooge and he knows it. Until legitimate elections are held I’m still the Cameroon Federation secretary-general that’s why IBA invited me to their Congress and locked out the fake president.”

Basile denied he has relocated to DR Congo.” I’m still in my country, I flew from Cameroon to Dubai, and I was in DRC for an official function in my capacity as the AFBC secretary-general.”

The AFBC acting secretary-general under president Berhanu, Yohanes Birhane however clarified they recognize Professor Rene and Simao Muanda as the legitimate presidents of Cameroon and Angola respectively, and that Basile is still under suspension.

Luyoyo’s faction has said they will continue running their show as the legitimate leaders of AFBC despite not being recognized by the IBA. It will be interesting to see how they will conduct their affairs in African boxing which now has two presidents, Eyassu Berhanu and General Ilunga Luyoyo both claiming legitimacy.

Observers are at a loss as to why the Luyoyo faction boycotted the Dubai AFBC Congress instead of attending the function to express their dissatisfaction with the Berhanu regime. Their action has been viewed as disrespectful to IBA which catered for the travel and accommodation expenses for most of them. The Luyoyo rebel group had reportedly been planning to land the killer punch on Berhanu at the AFBC Congress in Dubai but it’s not known how they were going to do it, and instead shot themselves in the foot by staying out of the Congress. They held their own parallel Congress in Dubai during which they endorsed the removal of Berhanu, suspension of Balde and Azania including the ouster of Niger’s Malam as the federation president.

Explaining why they boycotted the Berhanu-backed AFBC Congress, the secretary general of the Luyoyo faction, Andrew Basile Kalong, said they could not attend a function having illegal officials in power from Cameroon, Angola, suspended Guinean president Alpha Balde and Berhanu himself whom they claim to have removed from power in the Kinshasa meeting in October.

“It’s ridiculous Eyassu claims his congress was attended by 32 delegates, that’s a lie, he had about 18 delegates,” said Basile.

“Our Congress was attended by 27 delegates, we have the numbers, 21 were present and six attended through Zoom,” said Basile.

Against this background, it’s obvious things have fallen apart in African boxing. This is a serious issue in which the boxing barons cannot continue hiding their heads in the sand in a vain bid to run away from reality. IBA will now have to use the big stick to bring order once and for all in African boxing. The formation of a Normalisation Committee for the stipulated six months will be the most suitable to sort out the current mess in AFBC.

BOXER GICHARU’S KREMLEV PORTRAIT IS AWESOME.

BOXER GICHARU’S KREMLEV PORTRAIT IS AWESOME.

The visual arts potential of Kenya’s former international boxer, Benson Gicharu, has once again been manifested in the masterpiece portrait he has produced of International Boxing Association (IBA) President Umar Kremlev.

Gicharu says it took him three weeks and two days to complete work on this unique work of art that shows his creativity and originality.

“The portrait is made up of newspaper and magazine cuttings fixed together to make his face,” explains Gicharu.

“It was not easy. For instance, it took me two days to complete his face. I remember working on the left ear for the whole day,” says Gicharu, a double medallist in the Commonwealth Games, two-time Olympian and a silver medallist in the 2012 Africa Olympic qualifiers in Casablanca, Morocco.

Gicharu further narrates how he produced IBA President Kremlev’s portrait.

“First I made sure the background was unique. I can say it was timely, too considering that the background magazine was published while I was working on the portrait, it’s made up of newspaper and magazine cuttings that I put together to make his face. There are some areas where I found myself making mistakes, so I would add another paper on top to see if it fits well.

“Looking at the final results, I can say it was worth it for a leader who has revolutionized boxing by improving the lives of many boxers worldwide through prize money tournaments. I had to make a unique portrait for President Kremlev.”

Once complete, Gicharu’s next hurdle was how to deliver the portrait to President Kremlev.

He didn’t have to wait long. I came in handy when I landed the Dubai trip through IBA’s invitation. Therefore everything worked well to clinical perfection as I delivered the portrait home. I’m sure Kremlev will love this unique piece of art from Gicharu who is also the coach and owner of Mukuru Fight-4-Life Boxing Club.

CHINYEMBA NAMED BEST BOXER AS ZAMBIA WHIP RUSSIA

Zambia…6 Russia….2

Zambia’s celebrated boxer Patrick “Baddo” Chinyemba put up a classic show as the rampant Zambian boxers whipped Russia 6-2 in an international friendly match in Lusaka on Friday, December 6.

Featuring in the main bout of the night, Chinyemba dominated the Russian in all three rounds, mixing boxing and entertainment to the loud applause of the packed house which enjoyed his ring antics.

It therefore came as no surprise when the skillful and talented Chinyemba, reigning African Games flyweight champion and Olympic Games quarter-finalist, was named the Best Boxer for his exemplary performance that had the crowd on the edge of their seats.

In the co-main fight, Commonwealth Games silver medallist Stephen Zimba was forced to use all tricks in the book to squeeze a close 3-2 win over Iangibaev Hlikhan.

Minimumweight Nene Maonga set Zambia on the winning trail with an emphatic 5-0 victory over Mikhail Propokyev and then featherweight Albert Ngulube gave Zambia their second win beating Vitaly Boytsiv 5-0 with World Championships quarter-finalist and 2022 Africa Championships gold me Andrew Chilata mercilessly hammering Rasul Magomedov 5-0.

Zambia’s two losers were African Games silver medallist Emmanuel Katema and African Games welterweight champion Gerald Kabinda with game Katema narrowly losing 3-2 to Mikhail Grigoryan and Kabinda going down 4-1 to Belevitin Daniel.

KENYA, DRC SET FOR NEW CONTEST NEXT YEAR IN NAIROBI

0

DR Congo’s national boxing team will tour Kenya next year for a new contest between the two countries in April .

Boxing Federation of Kenya (BFK) President Anthony “Jamal” Otieno announced this today in Dubai after a meeting with DR Congo’s federation boss Ferdinand Ilunga Luyoyo.

The two held talks on the sidelines of the IBA Global Forum and Congress at the Jumeira Beach Hotel in Dubai.

“I’m excited to announce we have agreed in principle to cooperate with DRC to speed up the development of boxing in Africa, starting with this new annual tournament,” Jamal told boxerworld.co.ke

“DRC will give us stiff competition which will be useful to boxers from the two countries as well as fostering unity among our youth,” said Jamal, adding that they have yet to agree on the name of the annual contest.

“We can call it Unity Cup, for instance but we will decide, we will discuss on other modalities like having it on a two-leg basis.”

In addition to DRC visiting Kenya, Jamal said BFK has lined up other international friendlies in Nairobi with Zambia earmarked for Jamhuri celebrations match in December, 2025.

“I have several big plans in the pipeline for Kenya boxing, just watch this space,” said Jamal.

CUTE DUBAI HOSTS SUPER DUPER IBA CHAMPIONS’ NIGHT CARD AS PACMAN STEALS SHOW

0

A stunning skyline and architectural magnificence of Dubai’s world famous skyscrapers provided a perfect background to a packed and a colourful IBA Champions Night presser at the Dubai Mall Hotel on December 5, 2024.

It was one of the best ever International Boxing Association press conference and weigh-in ceremony held ahead of Friday’s, (December 6) IBA Champions’ Night loaded boxing bonanza that will see Cuba’s two-time Olympic champion Arlen Lopez (4-0) defend his IBA 80kg world title against a formidable opponent in Russia’s Nikita Zon (8–1-1). In the co-main event, Uzbekistan’s 2016 Olympic champion Zoirov Shakhobidin will face Venezuela’s Yoel Finol for IBA Pro 57kg world title.

Five Continental title fights are lined up, one of them featuring DR Congo’s South Africa-based Patrick Mukala and Namibia’s unbeaten Paulinus Ndjolonimus who enjoys height advantage over the DRC boxer.

Mukala (19-2-1, 15 KOs) and the towering Ndjolonimus (19-0, 17 KOs) will trade leather for IBA Pro Africa middleweight title. It’s the second IBA Africa title being contested for. The first one was the flyweight crown won by Zambia’s African Games champion and Paris Olympics quarter-finalist Patrick “Baddo” Chinyemba who KO’d Ghana’s Theophilus Allotey in the fourth round in August this year during the first ever IBA Champions’ Night show staged in Africa in Ethiopia’s capital city, Addis Ababa.

“I’m not worried about his height, Infact I like them when they’re taller. I’m a class above him let him know his unbeaten record is gone,” said Mukala.

The Namibia boxer is not shaken by Mukala’s threats. “I will use my height advantage well, he’s going to punch shadows,” said Ndjolonimus accompanied by his promoter and manager Nestor Tobias.

The presence of celebrated Philippine’s former eight-division world champion and Senator Manny Pacquiao aka Pacman added more spice and flavour to the well coordinated event graced by IBA president Umar Kremlev flanked by the secretary-general and CEO Chris Roberts.

Pacquiao was mobbed by a battery of international journalists fielding questions calmly from each one of them as some posed for selfies against the astonishing background of Dubai’s over 200 marvelous skyscrapers.

I ask the 45-year-old Pacquiao for how long he intends to keep on fighting.

“It’s difficult to tell, I know I’m very disciplined I can fight till I’m 50 years,” said the humble and down to earth Pacman.

On the much talked-about rematch with Floyd Mayweather Jr, Pacman said:”I’m ready for a points-scoring exhibition because I know I’ll beat him.”

Today’s Champions’ Night showdown will be preceded by what promises to be a volatile African Boxing Confederation (AFBC) Congress in the wake of the current hostilities between the two warring factions, one led by AFBC president Eyassu Berhanu and the other group led by DR Congo’s federation president Ferdinand Ilunga Luyoyo whose faction passed a vote of no confidence on Eyassu’s leadership in Kinshasa during the AFBC African Men’s and Women’s Championships in October.

Eyassu scoffed at his ouster describing the Kinshasa gathering as an illegal meeting, and received backing from IBA who termed as unconstitutional the Kinshasa meeting.

The Luyoyo faction however insist they don’t recognise Berhanu as AFBC president and are reportedly planning to land the KO punch in Dubai, claiming they have the numbers and will therefore have their way come rain or shine.

“Eyassu must go, we’re tired of his fence-sitting and divisive leadership,” said one of his critics and a key player in Luyoyo’s faction that reportedly enjoys the backing of over 30 AFBC member countries.

Tension is high in Dubai especially with reports trickling that Luyoyo’s hardliners intend to hold their own Congress in Dubai, a move which the IBA will definitely not take lightly in view of the fact that they have funded the travel and accommodation of AFBC’s National Federation representatives attending the Congress. IBA will view the parallel Congress as disrespect, and is therefore keenly watching the unfolding scenario with ring analysts saying the international body might eventually be forced to use the big stick to bring order once and for all in the beleaguered African boxing body

SHISIA, WANJIRU NOW ARMED WITH COACHING KNOWLEDGE

0

International boxers have several options when they step out of the ring.

They can decide to maintain their association with boxing as coaches and administrators.

They can as well opt to become silent fans, or make their presence felt by venting their repressed emotions on the federation of the day through stinging criticism without offering solutions or further still decide to keep off from boxing completely and concentrate on their personal activities.

Two former internationals, Dan Shisia and Teresiah Wanjiru, have decided to give back to boxing through coaching.

The two Kenya Prisons Service employees were among the 21 coaches who attended the just-concluded 10-day IBA 1-Star coaching course organised by Boxing Federation of Kenya (BFK) at the Chel-C Hotel in Nairobi.

Shisia and Wanjiru spoke to boxersworld.co.ke to share their experiences in the course conducted online by IBA instructors.

“We learnt a lot and I wish to thank the BFK for bringing the course at our doorstep,” says Shisia, adding:” I learnt how to handle elite and professional boxers and how a coach needs to be treated with respect irrespective of the boxer’s reputation.”

Wanjiru, the Zone 3 light-welterweight champion, was excited to be selected for the course.

“I appreciate BFK’s efforts to give us women boxers a chance to become professional coaches,” says Wanjiru, the second female boxer to attend 1-Star coaching course after Liz Andiego who took part in a similar course in 2021 at the Hilton Hotel, Nairobi.

“I advice more women boxers to take up such opportunities because it’s the only way we shall improve the female boxing standards in Kenya, we need more female coaches to come on board to guide the increasing number of female boxers taking up the sport.

“I’ve learnt a lot in the course given that boxing and coaching are two different areas. I’m so happy to have gathered knowledge on legal issues, safety of the boxers, how to prepare a boxer reach her or his full potential which I never knew exists in the coaching course.”

Shisia, the elder brother to Kenya’s top heavyweight in pro boxing Maurice Okola or Moristo if you like, will share his knowledge at his Kenya Prisons Boxing Club where he is one of the coaches of this once giant of Kenya boxing.

He represented Kenya’s national team for 12 years, winning middleweight bronze in his international debut in the 2003 African Games in Abuja and won bronze again at the 2007 African Games in Algeria. He also took part in the 2006 Commonwealth Games and twice at the 2009 and 2013 World Championships calling it quits after taking part in the 2015 African Games to concentrate on coaching.

The pinnacle of Wanjiru’s consistent appearance for the national team since making her debut in 2015 was at the 2022 Zone 3 Africa Championships in Kinshasa where she was among the six gold medallists who enabled Kenya finish an inspiring second place behind DR Congo. Wanjiru, Everline Akinyi and Liz Andiego were the three female gold medallists. Kenya won a total of 18 medals – six gold, five silver and seven bronze medals.

“That was my best ever performance with the national team,” proudly recalls Wanjiru.

“I proved I’m one of the best female boxers in Africa because winning gold in an international competition is not a; walk in the park, the gold in Kinshasa was indeed a morale booster.”

Wanjiru can’t wait to team up with the national technical bench headed by Musa Benjamin to take women’s boxing to the next level.

“The knowledge I’ve gained in the course will guide me to improve women’s boxing, it will also be easier for me to interact with the female boxers, and this will give them a chance to open up on some personal female issues,” says Wanjiru now based at Kamiti Prisons.

NEW OPPONENT FOR LOPEZ

Cuban Arlen Lopez will now defend his IBA Pro 80kg World Champion title belt against Russia’s Nikita Zon in the main event at IBA Champions’ Night in Dubai on 6 December.

Lopez (4-0), who defeated Luis Antonio Tejada of the Dominican Republic to become the first World Champion in his weight division back in August, was scheduled to face Russia’s Sharabutdin Ataev in the final fight of the night, but his initial opponent has withdrawn due to illness.

Zon (8-1-1) is a worthy challenger, with a strong professional record. His last victory came just recently on 30 November, winning by TKO6 against Odiljon Aslonov. Three of his past five matches have been won by this verdict.

His only defeat to date came at IBA Champions’ Night Astana in December 2023, in a losing effort to Bekzad Nurdauletov from Kazakhstan.

The co-main event will see Shakhobidin Zoirov from Uzbekistan face Yoel Finol of Venezuela for the IBA Pro 57kg World Championship.

Continental title fights are to take place between Jose Quiles and Ardit Murja, Joel Camilleri and Weljon Mindoro, Ryan Martin and Jose Miguel Borrego, and Patrick Mukala and Paulinus Ndjolonimu too.

Other matches scheduled on the fight card include the women’s contest between Iran’s Puneh Akhundtabarmazandarani and Xenia Jorneac of Romania; as well as a men’s bout that sees Armenia’s Artush Hovhannisyan face off against Giorgi Kushitashvili of Georgia.

On Wednesday, the boxers showed their skills at a public workout at Rocky Road Boxing Club in Dubai. The star-studded line-up took part in a training day prior to the event as part of IBA’s week-long activities in the United Arab Emirates.

Cuban Arlen Lopez, the IBA Pro World Champion at 80kg, with his opponent, Nikita Zon performed in front of the media showing their outstanding skills. It is part of IBA’s ambitions to motivate as many as possible into the world of sport and fitness, particularly in boxing.

IBA Champions’ Night is scheduled for 6 December at the Agenda Arena, followed by the 2024 IBA Ordinary Congress and Global Boxing Forum on 7 December.
