YUCATECO PROMOTIONS TO SPEND $100,000 FOR WBC AMATEUR BOXING EVENT

Nigeria’s owner and CEO of Yucateco Boxing Promotions Imonlei Yakubu Imadu is spending a whopping $100,000 for the inaugural WBC/ABU Amateur Boxing Tournament scheduled for Lagos from February 6-8

The owner and CEO of Yucateco Boxing Promotions, Imonlei Yakubu Imadu, will spend a whopping $100,000 for the inaugural World Boxing Council (WBC)/Africa Boxing Union (ABU) Amateur Championships from February 6-8 at Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere, Lagos.

Middleweight Isaac Zebra Ssenyange is one of Uganda’s main hope in Lagos. He is a member of Zebra Boxing Club

“I’m doing it alone it’s fully self sponsored because I want all the talented African boxers to get an opportunity to participate in the WBC Amateur Boxing World Cup in Mexico,” Imadu told boxersworld.co.ke in a telephone interview from Lagos.

“There’s no single sponsor supporting me, every penny spent is from my personal pocket.”

Imadu said the $100,000 expenditure will cater for among other things food, accommodation, transportation within Nigeria, publicity, equipment, branding, location, medical, insurance, medals, belts, boxing jerseys, license and training of referees and judges.

Imadu clarified there’s no prize money for the Lagos tournament which is an African qualifier for the WBC Amateur World Cup in Mexico later this year.

The Yucateco CEO however said the Mexico tournament will have prize money.

“In the case of the World Cup in Mexico, there’s prize money because they have international sponsors but here in Africa they’re no sponsors at all yet there’s a lot of money in our continent,” said Imadu who also sponsors the populat Yucateco League in Nigeria.

“That is why I have to make this huge sacrifice for the benefit of African boxers to be able to attend the World Cup to compete against world’s top boxers as well as get world ratings and international exposure. Personally I’m gaining nothing financially.”

Imadu is not only sponsoring the WBC/ABU Amateur tournament but he has also built the gymnasium to be used for the three-day event.

“Also worthy of note is the commissioning of a modern boxing gym built by Yucateco Boxing Promotions,” said Imadu.

“The gym will be handed over to the Lagos State Government as part of our support for boxing development in Africa starting from our immediate catchment area: Lagos, Nigeria, West Africa.”

A total of 54 boxers from six countries have registered for the WBC/ABU Amateur Boxing tournament with Nigeria entering 38 boxers.

Besides Nigeria, other participating countries are Benin, Uganda, Ghana, Togo and Cote d’Ivoire.

Uganda is the only East African country taking part in the Lagos event, represented by two female and six male boxers.

CLARESSA SHIELDS BECOMES UNDISPUTED HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION

Claressa Shields outpoints Danielle Perkins to become first undisputed heavyweight champion in women’s boxing; 29-year-old only boxer, female or male, to achieve undisputed status across three different divisions in four-belt era; Shields hindered by shoulder problem and set for surgery.

Claressa Shields beat Danielle Perkins to become female boxing’s first undisputed heavyweight world champion

Claressa Shields added to her glittering CV by outpointing Danielle Perkins to become female boxing’s first undisputed heavyweight world champion.

Shields is also the first boxer, female or male, to achieve undisputed status across three different divisions in the four-belt era (heavyweight, middleweight, light-middleweight) after her win over the previously unbeaten Perkins.

Shields, boxing in her native Flint, took her unblemished record as a pro to 16-0 after flooring Perkins with a right hook in the 10th and final round, ahead of the judges scoring the fight 97-92, 99-90, and 100-89 in her favour.

The 29-year-old later revealed a shoulder problem she sustained last week meant the fight almost did not take place.

“I actually think I’m going to have to have surgery on my left arm. I tore my labrum last week, so the fight almost didn’t happen,” Shields said.

“I didn’t want to let Flint down, but I really couldn’t use my jab the way that I wanted to. I iced it, I did therapy and now I think I’m going to have a shoulder surgery.”

Shields stars on Flint homecoming

Perkins, who had been victorious in her first five fights, had a weight and height advantage but was second best throughout the contest despite against Shields despite absorbing numerous shots, notably being wobbled in round three.

Claressa Shields (right) beat Danielle Perkins (left) to become undisputed heavyweight world champion.

“Danielle was strong, she was definitely a problem but my experience and my skills got me over it,” added the 2012 and 2016 Olympic gold medallist.

“I’ve been in plenty of street fights with bigger people and I had to use some of my skills in that today, too. So, when I dropped her in the last round, it’s because she got greedy.”

Shields said the fight could have taken place at Barclays Center in New York but she was determined to bring the first undisputed heavyweight contest in female boxing history to Michigan.

She now wants a rematch with Hanna Gabriels having beaten the Costa Rican back in 2018 to capture the IBF and WBA middleweight titles.

She added: “It ain’t enough. That’s how I think. I think that I didn’t get my flowers for so many years so even though I’m getting them now, it’s like that’s not enough.

“I deserve more than that. I’m fighting for a million dollars. I’m supposed to be getting paid five. This ain’t it. So, for me, that’s where the fire comes from.”

NAKAWA COMBINED OVERCOME NAIROBI COUNTY

NAKAWA COMBINED OVERCOME NAIROBI COUNTY

International Faith Sabatia, who represented Kenya’s national boxing team in the Africa Championships in Kinshasa in 2024, gave Nairobi their first win

Uganda’s Nakawa Combined defeated Nairobi County 10-5 bouts in an international friendly match at Katale Primary School play ground on Sunday, February 2.

The hotly contested 15-bout encounter – fought under improvised floodlight – rekindled the fierce rivalry of yesteryears between Kenyan and Ugandan boxers.

Nakawa made their intentions known by winning the first three bouts through light-flyweight Kato Kazimbwe, flyweight Matovu Livingstone and bantamweight Kyammbade Faizo.

Nairobi fought back gamely to chalk up their first victory through international Faith Nafuna who defeated Impindi Zanah at bantamweight.

In one of the main bouts of the night, African Games featherweight bronze medallist Kassim Nakawa scored a questionable 4-1 victory over the more impressive Nairobi County’s Chris Juma who had the better of the exchanges using his height advantage effectively against the southpaw Murungi whose win saw Nakawa leading 4-1 bouts before Nairobi’s lightweight Robert Gachui gave the visitors their second win by beating Elphazi Mbazira.

Inspired by Gachui’s 4-1 points win over Mbazira, light-welterweight Joseph Andusi outpointef Ochan Raymond and then female featherweight Emmaculate Atieno brought Nairobi back on level terms 4-4 bouts following her points win over Impindi Leilah.

Nakawa however regained the lead through welterweight Jaffar Onen and went on to dominate Nairobi County in the remaining bouts.

Nakawa Combined vs Nairobi County match was fought under an improvised floodlight

Any hopes Nairobi had on one of their star boxers, middleweight Lenox Francis fizzled out when Nakawa’s Ojok Alfred’s heavy body punches had the Nairobian painfully on his knee. The referee wisely waved off the fight in the first round. Lenox appeared unfit for the Kampala match.

KENYA, UGANDA RENEW RIVALRY TODAY IN KAMPALA

The four boxers adding more fire in today's Nakawa Combined vs Nairobi County thriller in Kampala. Clockwise is Ojok Alfred, Chris Juma, Kassim Murungi and Lenox Francis

KENYA, UGANDA RENEW RIVALRY TODAY IN KAMPALA

The age-old boxing rivalry between Kenya and Uganda will be renewed today when Nakawa Combined team host Nairobi County in an international friendly match at the Katale Primary School play ground from 2pm.

For decades, the two East African countries, once among the world’s superpowers in the ring, engaged in fierce combat during the defunct Millington Drake Trophy contest later renamed Brunner/Utafiki Trophy and then Urafiki Cup.

Any match between Ugandan and Kenyan boxers was packed to capacity as fans enjoyed watching top-notch boxing in the two-leg inter-country duel often marred by biased officiating that at one time there was a suggestion to involve neutral referees and judges.

_
Uganda’s African Games featherweight bronze medallist Kassim Murungi (right) has a mountain to climb against Kenya’s stubborn Chris Juma in one of the highlights.

This rivalry of yesteryears will be rekindied in today’s eagerly awaited match that has all the trappings of a thriller with a new generation of boxers now in the driver’s seat.

Topping the bill is the featherweight bout pitting African Games bronze medallist Kassim Murungi and Kenya’s sensational Chris Juma and the middleweight encounter between Uganda’s ruthless body puncher Ojok Alfred and Lenox Francis.

Among other Africa’s Emerging Stars in the Nairobi team include welterweight Joshua Clive, bantamweight Faith Sabatia, light-middleweight Michael Oduor and heavyweight Glen Agade.

And in Nakawa Combined besides Kassim Murungi, Ojok Alfred and 2020 Africa Olympic qualifiers semi-finalist Emily Nakalema, there’s minimumweight Kato Kazibwe, lightweight Alfazi Amvaziira, welterweight Onen Jaffar and light-middleweight Mawanda Depark.

The youthful Nairobi County team battling Nakawa Combined today in Kampala

It’s to be hoped the Ugandan R&Js will conduct themselves professionally to maintain their integrity to the outside world. Let justice and fairplay prevail in the ring.

BRILLIANT SHOW BY AFRICAN BOXERS DESPITE LOSING

0
South Africa's Thabiso "The Rock" Mchunu (left) proved a stubborn opponent to Russia's winner Muslim Gadzhimagomedov in their 10-round bridgerweight main fight.

BRILLIANT SHOW BY AFRICAN BOXERS DESPITE LOSING

Thabiso Mchunu’s trainer Sean Smith says he returns to South Africa with his head held high.

The four African boxers may have lost their fights in IBA Champions’ Night card in Moscow but they displayed spirited and gutsy performance that won them several admirers at Moscow’s International Boxing Center in the seven-bout card on Friday, January 31.
However, the abrupt decision by Nigerian flyweight Ayisat Oriyomi to discontinue with her scheduled eight-round bout against Kazakhstan’s Angelina Lukas left fans puzzled with unanswered questions.
Nigeria’s Ayisat Oriyomi surprised African fans when she refused to answer the bell for the fourth round in her eight-round flyweight fight against Kazakhstan’s Angelina Lukas (right).
The Nigerian boxer held her own, scoring mostly with straight punches and guarding herself well against Lukas’ barrage of punches but surprisingly she did not answer the bell for the fourth round.
The commentator on IBA’s Livestream said the seconders put a stop to the fight while some media outlets in Nigeria said Oriyomi refused to fight on.
Efforts to get a comment from Oriyomi and her manager were unsuccessful. They didn’t respond to questions I sent them on WhatsApp. It was Oriyomis first defeat in her nine-bout unbeaten run.
DR Congo-born Belgian Jack “Big Jack” Mulowayi exploded several punches on the head of his Russian opponent Suslenkov but that was not enough for him to win the fight.
The other three African boxers to lose were South Africa’s cruiserweight champion Thabiso Mchunu, Cameroon’s Mouhamed Oumarou and DR Congo-born Belgian Jack Mulowayi.
Mchunu lost unanimously to Russia’s two-time world champion, Olympic silver medallist and WBC bridgerweight champion Muslim Gazdhimagomedov, Oumarou was beaten on points by Russia’s Tamerlan Ozdoev in a six-round light-welterweight bout which could have gone either way while the towering Mulowayi lost on majority points decision to Russia’s Artem Suslenkov in a 10-round IBF Europe title fight. The judges scored 96-94, 95-95 and 97-93.
As the referee held their hands waiting for the announcement of the winner, a confident Mulowayi, seemingly satisfied with his performance, lifted his left fist anticipating victory but it was the Russian boxer who carried the day.
Enjoying reach advantage, Mulowayi kept Suslenko at bay with his left jab and explosive combinations upstairs. After the first round, Suslenko’s right side of the face below his eye had a bruise. The shorter Russian concentrated mostly on body blows and whenever he went close to Mulowayi he somewhat volunteered to take several face punches to rock his opponents’ body fighting from the inside.
Mchunu stood his ground against Gadzhimagomedov who used his long reach effectively against his shorter southpaw opponent whose main undoing was failure to find the range that most of his punches did not hit the target.
While admitting Mchunu’s third consecutive defeat had put a dent in his career, trainer Sean Smith was impressed with his boxer’s resilience and ring dexterity.
In the opening light-welterweight six-round fight, Russia’s Tamerlan Ozdoev (right) outpointed Cameroon’s Mouhamed Oumarou.
“I think besides the result we can take a lot of positives, Muslim couldn’t execute his gameplan on Thabiso and I’m sure he also felt frustrated,” Smith told boxersworld.co.ke.
“We took the fight on five weeks’ notice . No excuses but it’s difficult to find those elite performances coming from inactivity and short camps. He does not live in my city so it’s difficult for us to stay ready all the time
“Positively we saw he’s still able to compete at this level. We.comeback fights back home. Get some wins then I wouldn’t mind us fighting Lenar Perez on the IBA platform.”

FOUR AFRICAN BOXERS IN TODAY’S IBA CHAMPIONS’ NIGHT CARD

South Africa’s Thabiso Mchunu (left) has his work cut out against Russia’s Muslim Gadzhimagomedov in a 10-round bridgerweight bout

A scintillating IBA Champions’ Night show is in the offing today with four African boxers in the seven-bout card to be headlined by the 10-round bridgerweight duel featuring South Africa’s cruiserweight champion Thabiso “The Rock” Mchunu (23-7-0, 13 KOs) and WBA bridgerweight champion, Russia’s towering unbeaten two-time world gold medallist and Tokyo Olympic champion Muslim Gadzhimagomedov (5-0, 3 KOs).

It’s a fight the 36-year-old Mchunu must win at all costs to redeem his career which is on the rocks. The southpaw South African boxer will have to devise an effective strategy to get the better of the taller aggressive Russian.

Tonight’s exciting IBA Champions’ Night card starts at 7.30pm East African time and will be livestreamed in IBA YouTube Channel which has over 380,000 subscribers.

In addition to Mchunu, other African boxers in the mix at Moscow’s International Boxing. Center are Cameroon’s Mouhamed Oumarou, Nigeria’s female flyweight Ayisat Oriyomi and DR Congo-born Belgian Jack “Big Jack” Mulowayi (15-3-1, 11 KOs) who fights unbeaten Russian Artem Suslenkov (11-0-0) in an 8-round cruiserweight bout.

Cameroon’s Mouhamed Oumarou (left) battles Russian Tamerlan Ozdoev

Ayisat, unbeaten in nine fights, battles Kazakhstan’s Angelina Lukas, enjoying a six-bout unbeaten streak while Oumarou, who has won all his three bouts at home, meets Russia’s Tamerlan Ozdoev in the opening six-round light-welterweight bout. The Russian made his pro boxing debut last December.
