IBA PRIZE MONEY ENABLES CHINYEMBA TO COMPLETE.HIS 3-BEDROOMED HOUSE IN LUSAKA

0
Zambian star boxers Patrick Chinyemba with the IBA Africa flyweight belt he won in Addis Ababa in 2024. He now wants to fight in IBA.Pro series

▪️The Zambian current most decorated boxer now eyes $300,000 for gold medallists at the richest ever amateur boxing tournament slated for next month in Dubai.

The commercialisation of boxing by the International Boxing Association (IBA) is widely considered a major financial boon to African boxers some of whom have narrated how the introduction of prize money has changed their lives among them Zambia’s African Games flyweight champion Patrick “Baddo” Chinyemba.

In an interview with boxersworld.co.ke, Chinyemba, a quarter-finalist at the Paris Olympics and gold medallist in the 2022 Africa Elite Championships, does not hide his joy at the completion of his own house in the capital city Lusaka.

“I consider this a big achievement in my life because at 23 years of age it’s not easy to build a house in our city for many of my peers,” says Chinyemba.

“I completed the house after receiving $10,000 Maputo prize money from the IBA, I’ll forever sing praises of this great boxing body that has changed our lives.

“IBA are doing a very good job for us boxers, besides myself other boxers too are now proud owners of their own houses including my friend Alcinda Dos Santos of Mozambique.”

Chinyemba further talks on the difficulty of his agemates owning a house in prime plots in Lusaka.

“Unless one takes a loan it’s not easy, it’s even more difficult to build a house from our salaries, you’ll save for eternity,” says Chinyemba, adding:”Only a few can do so depending on how much they’re earning at work and those from wealthy families.”

Chinyemba’s body blows took their toll on Ghana’s Theo Allotey. He quit in the fourth round of their Addis fight

Chinyemba has so far earned a total of $33,000 courtesy of IBA’s prize money. In addition to the $10,000 he won in Maputo, he was paid $20,000 for clinching the IBA Africa flyweight title in the first ever Champions’ Night contest on African soil staged in 2024 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and $3000 for quarter-finalists in the 2023 Men’s World Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan which marked the first time quarter-finalists were being paid, an undertaking by IBA to ensure the prize money trickles down to other deserving boxers.

The Zambian star boxer has already moved in the new three-bedroomed house with wife Shalom and daughter Precious.

“My wife is so happy ever smiling by having her permanent home in Lusaka, she has now become more interested in boxing always asking me when is my next fight , our daughter though only one year and seven months also knows she’s in a new home as she runs allover in the spacious building, all this through boxing and President Umar Kremlev, long live IBA.”

Inspired by his investment, Chinyemba is now eyeing the alluring $300,000 top prize money for the gold medallists in the 2025 Men’s World Boxing Championships scheduled for December 2-13 in Dubai.

“If all goes well I want to get that money and invest on rental houses in Lusaka, it’s a lot of cash that would take pro boxers many years to earn in Africa and other parts of the world.

He singles out reigning world champion and Paris Olympic gold medallist Uzbekistan’s Hasanboy Dusmatov as the only hurdle in his goal of winning $300,000 in Dubai.

“My only threat in flyweight is Hasanboy, I was looking forward to fight him in Paris Olympics but I lost in the quarter-finals to Cape Verde’s David Pina, the rest cannot beat me unless otherwise. I’m fit and ready for Dubai,” says Chinyemba once again lamenting on few international top-notch tournaments in Africa.

“After the Paris Olympics, I’ve just boxed in the Champions Night in Addis, locally I fought only once this year in Livingstone and won during a tournament involving all the provinces. We were waiting for the Africa Championships to make more money but it didn’t happen.

“Lack of exposure is another big problem facing most African boxers,” says Chinyemba.

“Like now we’re going to Dubai but African boxers have not taken part in any international tournament outside our continent and this affects most of the boxers when they appear in a tough tournament like the one in Dubai next month.”

Chinyemba has made a passionate to IBA to include him in the pro boxing series to defend his IBA Africa flyweight title he captured in Addis Ababa via a fourth round TKO win over Ghana’s Theo “Lopez” Allotey who could not withstand Chinyemba’s digging body blows.

“I really want to appear in IBA.Pro series to defend my Africa title or fight for another title,” says Chinyemba describing the IBA.Pro as a gem in giving boxers more opportunities to empower themselves financially.

Robert Okaka maintained his unbeaten run over Humphrey “Jakababa” Ochieng as Africa Zone 3 minimumweight champion Silas Onyango stopped Abednego Kyalo in the second round during the semi-finals of the 5th and final leg of the Kenya National Boxing League at the United Church Hall in Kisumu on Friday, November 21, 2025.

Okaka aka Man Man Ngori outpointed Jakababa 5-0 to chalk up his sixth win in a row over the Kenya Police boxer. As expected, Okaka was in total command of the fight subjecting Jakababa to an eight count in the second round following a heavy right punch which exploded on Jakababa’s face.

Police’s Silas Onyango beat KDF’s Abednego Kyalo for the second time in a row with a second round stoppage victory. Kyalo sustained an injury above his right eye forcing the referee Tony Ouma to stop the fight.

African Military Games flyweight champion Kelvin “Young” Maina also defeated Nairobi’s Emmanuel “Manu” Chondo for the second time while Africa light-middleweight champion Boniface Mogunde remains unbeaten locally for seven years now following his first round stoppage victory over Laikipia’s Clinton Mutua.

Africa Zone 3 welterweight bronze medallist Wiseman Kavondo made a successful debut for Kenya Police, stopping Kisumu’s Rodney Nyangema.

Kavondo, Paul Omondi and Caleb Wandera have now officially been employed by the Kenya Police. This.now gives them more stability in their boxing careers.

The highlight of today’s finals is the third fight this year between 2024 Africa Championships bronze medallist Shaffi Bakari of Police and KDF’s Africa Military Games bantamweight champion Dennis Muthama. It’s 1-1 so far after Shaffi avenged the Mombasa defeat by Muthama during the fourth leg of the league in Nanyuki.

PROSTATE CANCER ATTACKS KENYA’S EX-INTERNATIONAL BOXER KAWASAKI

0
Kenya's former international boxer Chris "Kawasaki" Kariuki (left) with the writer of his health condition John Githanga in Nakuru. Kawasaki has been diagnosed with prostate cancer

20/11/2025

▪️He will be operated on next Monday, November 24 in Nakuru

Christopher Kariuki popularly known as “Kawasaki” has lately been battling with health-related issues including a mild dementia after overcoming a stroke in 2022.

Now he has been diagnosed with aggressive PROSTATE CANCER On November 13, 2025, his daughter Lysa Kariuki and I, took him to an accomplished UROLOGIST attached to the MERCY MISSION (ANNEX) HOSPITAL NAKURU for a comprehensive check-up.

He’s slated to undergo surgery to curb the cancer cells from spreading to other organs of the body. Kawasaki will be operated on at the aforementioned hospital’s theatre on November 24, and we’re praying and hoping that the surgery will be successful.

That’s why we’re requesting you to join us in praying for this former Kenya Army and Telkom-Kenya boxing champion!

Brief biography

This former light-welterweight champion needs no introduction to the golden-era down-town natives of Nakuru city.

He’s an original Nakurian, not to mention that he’s a St Paul’s Primary School and (partial) Afraha High School alumnus as well as an ex-soldier who was attached to the 1st Army Battalion in Nanyuki.

Those who happened to have witnessed his theatrics in the ring might concur with me that he used to be a remarkable lethal “banger” who hardly took a step backward from his opponents but kept charging forward like a wounded buffalo.

Kawasaki was always equipped with heavy punches ferociously lobbed at the adversary’s head and body in a bid to win with a knock out reminiscent of Marvin Hagler, former world middleweight champion

Some of the most memorable international fights that he participated in include: The 1984 and 1986 King’s Cup in Bangkok, Thailand. On the local scene, he took part in more fights than he can remember especially after he stripped off the military fatigue and started working for Telkom Kenya in Nakuru.

Kawasaki reigned supreme for many consecutive years as the indomitable Kecoso light-welterweight champion until he hanged the gloves and retired from the giant parastatal in the early 2000s.

Since then, he has been in self-employment running a hand cart transportation business in Nakuru town until recently when his hard-working nature and robust health started declining.

He still lives at Kivumbini No.2 Estate, not to mention that he’s a great friend of mine and my nephew-in-law by virtue of being the husband to my niece Grace Wahu, mother to Victa Kariuki and Lydia Nyambura

Let’s wish him quick recovery.

Story written by John Githanga

Several boxers have been affected by prostate cancer, including former world heavyweight champion Leon Spinks and middleweight title contender Rubin “Hurricane” Carter. More recently, active heavyweight champion Daniel Dubois has used his platform to raise awareness of the disease.

Notable Cases

Leon Spinks: The former heavyweight champion, famous for his upset victory over Muhammad Ali in 1978, was diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer in 2019, which had spread to his bladder. He died in February 2021 at the age of 67 after a lengthy battle with the illness.

Rubin “Hurricane” Carter:

A former middleweight title contender who spent nearly 20 years in prison after a wrongful murder conviction, Carter died in April 2014 at the age of 76 from prostate cancer.

Daniel Dubois

The current IBF heavyweight world champion has partnered with Prostate Cancer UK to raise awareness. He wore the organization’s logo during his September 2024 fight against Anthony Joshua and encourages men to check their risk for the disease.

Joe Augustine

A former professional boxer who was diagnosed with stage three prostate cancer at age 48, despite having no family history or initial symptoms other than general discomfort. He successfully recovered and now advocates for men’s health and regular screening.

WORLD CHAMP ACHIENG COULD FACE USA BOXER FOR VACANT WBC SUPER LIGHTWEIGHT TITLE

▪️The WBC female rankings committee is exploring various options with a mouth-watering clash between Kenya’s Sarah Achieng and Samantha Worthington of the USA more appetising

19/11/2025

The WBC female rankings committee will look at options for the vacant WBC female super lightweight title recently vacated by Britain’s Chantelle Cameron.

There has been quite a few options for sanction which will be discussed shortly but nothing concrete at this stage. One option being looked at is an attractive possible fight between Number 3 Samantha Worthington (USA) and Kenya’s fourth-ranked Sarah Achieng aka Angel of War.

Kenya’s Sarah Achieng (left) in the driver’s seat against Malawi’s Anisha Basheel whom she soundly beat in 2021 to capture the Commonwealth super lightweight title in Nairobi. There’s a possibility of Achieng vying for WBC world title.

A comment by the head of female boxing stated: “The WBC likes the look of that match up.”

However there’s nothing confirmed at this stage till all submissions have been looked at but there is a high chance this clash could be sanctioned and negotiations can commence.

Cameron vacated the WBC light-welterweight world title in protest at not being able to compete under the same rules as male fighters, according to a BBC report.

In women’s professional boxing title fights are usually over 10 rounds, each of two minutes, while men’s title bouts are 12 rounds of three minutes. “Women’s boxing has come a long way, but there’s still progress to be made,” said 34-year-old Cameron.

“I’ve always believed in equality, and that includes the choice to fight equal rounds, equal opportunities, and equal respect. “I’m proud of my accomplishment in becoming a WBC champion, but it’s time to take a stand for what’s right and for the future of the sport.”

Cameron was elevated from ‘interim’ champion to full WBC light-welterweight world champion last month after Ireland’s Katie Taylor informed the sanctioning body she planned to take time away from boxing.

Since turning professional in 2017, Cameron has won 21 of 22 fights, is a former undisputed light-welterweight world champion and has also held a world title at lightweight.

Third-ranked Samantha Worthington of the USA likely opponent for Achieng

She handed Taylor her first career defeat in May 2023 to become undisputed champion, before losing the rematch six months later.

An elated Achieng’s coach and manager Alfred Analo aka Priest said they are waiting for the official confirmation and then get down to serious business.

Achieng recently made the first successful defence of her WBF world super lightweight title in Nairobi with a unanimous points win over Tanzania’s Feriche Mashaury to improve her record to 18-2, 9 KOs.
