OKAKA: WHY I LOST TO THE TRICKY RUSSIAN BOXERS

0

10/12/2025

The Kenyan twice Africa Championships bronze medallist, Robert Okaka, opens up on the challenge he faced against the tough Russian opponent but like a soldier he fought to the last bullet…

It’s all in boxersworld.co.ke on Thursday, East Africa’s first ever boxing website.

Africa now remains with three boxers, two Zambians Patrick Chinyemba and Emmanuel Katemba and Mali’s Djibril Traore all in the semi-finals of the $8.32m IBA Men’s World Boxing Championships in Dubai. The battle is getting more intensive with boxers aiming to pocket the alluring prize money at stake.

Breaking news!!! SMART PATRICK CHINYEMBA $75,000 RICHER IN SEMIS

10/12/2025

Zambia’s boxing posterboy Patrick “Baddo’ Chinyemba romped through to the $75,000 bracket with a well deserved points win over Kazakhstan’s 2021 Asian champion Sabit Daniyal to become the second African boxer to qualify for World Championships semi-finals at the Dubai Sports Complex on Wednesday, December 10, 2025.

Chinyemba’s higher ring IQ saw him outsmarting and outwitting the Kazakh boxer to make it to the $75,000 money bracket.

The African Games flyweight champion and Paris Olympics quarter-finalist cleverly piled on points on the backfoot to join Mali’s Djibril Traore in the semis.

“I now want to Hasanboy!!” Chinyemba roared from Dubai when I spoke to him on phone.

For a long time now Chinyemba has been baying for the blood of Uzbekistan’s defending world flyweight champion and double Olympic Games gold medallist Hasanboy Dusmatov.

Breaking news!!! BIG CHEERS!! FOR AFRICA AS DJIBRIL TRAORE ENDS 8-YEAR MEDAL DROUGHT

0

10/12/2025

Mali’s Djibril Traore ended Africa’s eight-year medal drought by punching his way to the semi-finals of IBA Men’s World Boxing Championships in Dubai on Wednesday, December 10, 2025.

The stocky Traore, a bronze medallist at the 2024 African Championships, engaged Spain’s Sergio Martinez in a toe-to-toe phonebooth exchanges to win the middleweight quarter-final bout via a unanimous decision .

Traore moves to the $75,000 semi-final stage and has also ended Africa’s eight-year medal drought in this competition.

Cameroon’s super-heavyweight Arsene Fokou Fosso, now fighting as a pro boxer in Australia, was the last African boxer to win a medal – bronze – in this prestigious tournament at the 2017 Men’s World Boxing Championships in Hamburg, Germany.

COMMENTATOR SHOCKED HOW SAKEN BIBOSSINOV WON FIRST AND SECOND ROUNDS AGAINST ZAMBIA’S MWENGO MWALE

0

10/12/2025

Even the commentator was shocked! How on earth did Kazakhstan’s glamour boy Saken Bibossinov win the first and second rounds enroute to a suspicious victory over Zambia’s gritty African Games silver medallist Mwengo Mwale. He expressed his surprise why there was no live scoring.

Mwale was in the driver’s seat in the first and second rounds with perfectly-timed digging body shots and short right uppercuts which time and again tore through Bibossinov’s guard.

A flyweight gold medallist at the 2021 Worlds in which he beat rival Uzbekistan’s legend Hasanboy Dusmatov, Bibo came back strongly in the third round with Mwale – perhaps confident he had won the first and second rounds – not as aggressive as he was but the commentator said with no live scoring it was difficult for his coaches to know Bibo had surprisingly won the first round 4-1 and second one unanimously. Mwale lives to fight another but he has made a clean $10,000.

Zambia leads Africa with three boxers in the $10,000 money bracket followed by Mozambique with two boxers.

The three Zambians in the quarters are African Games flyweight champion Patrick “Baddo” Chinyemba, bantamweight Mwengo Mwale and light-welterweight Emmanuel Katemba both silver medallists at the Accra African Games.

Nine boxers out of 19 in action on Day Six qualified to the quarters to join three others who made it to the last eight on Day Five.

Among the casualties was Olympic Games bronze medallist David Pina who lost by unanimous points to the tough big-punching Serbian Artur Nagapetjan in the bantamweight division.

“I blame my for not telling I was trailing on points in round one and two, he only told me in the third round by then it was too late,” Pina told boxersworld.co.ke

Kenya’s Paul Omondi and Tanzania’s Issa Faki were also bundled out with Omondi joining compatriot Washington Wandera who lost on Day Five.

Zambia’s Paris Olympics quarter-finalist Patrick Chinyemba was the most impressive African winner on Day Six with an emphatic points victory over Moldova’s Ion Plinga who punched the air for the better part of the three rounds failing to connect on the swift moving Zambian whose ring antics added more flavour to his win.

IBA’s entry list shows Africa entered 128 boxers from 34 countries in the World Championships in Dubai. The 12 in the quarters are the only ones remaining in the competition.

OKAKA PROPELS KENYA TO THE FIRST EVER QUARTER-FINALS IN 43 YEARS IN BOXING WORLDS

0
Kenya's twice Africa Championships bronze medallist Robert Okaka (in red) has been in devastating form in Dubai winning his two bouts convincingly and authoritatively in the ongoing Men's World Boxing Championships

▪️Africa had 13 boxers in the pre-quarters on Monday but only three, Robert Okaka, Uganda’s Bob Turyatemba and Mali’s Djibril Traore qualified for the quarter-finals and are now in the $10,000 money bracket
▪️The second pre-quarters take place today with 19 boxers in action while a total of 82 have already been eliminated with 22 still in the competition

Dominant Robert Okaka produced a scintillating show of power-punching, superb timing and a relentless stream of accurate jabs to stop Tunisia’s Youssef Rafrafi in the third round at the Dubai Tennis Complex on Monday, December 8, 2025.

In seeing off the Tunisian, Okaka becomes the first ever Kenyan boxer in 43 years to qualify for the quarter-finals of the Men’s World Boxing Championships.

The last time Kenyan boxers made it to the quarter-finals in IBA’s signature event was in 1982 in Munich, Germany, through Olympics bronze medallist Ibrahim “Surf” Bilali and Hussein “Juba” Khalili who lost to the highly regarded Pernell Whittaker of the USA while Bilali was beaten by South Korea’s Yong-Mo Heo.

Fueled by his unyielding determination to excel at the big stage and the enticing IBA’s top prize money of $300,000, Okaka has been in devastating form in Dubai. The Kenyan soldier dominated Tunisia’s 2024 Africa Championships bronze medallist Youssef Rafrafi stopping him in the third round of the light-heavyweight round of 16.

Soon after the first bell, Okaka carried the fight to Rafrafi with accurate jabs to the body and upstairs. He floored Rafrafi with a solid right punch to the chin in the second for an eight count.

Stung by Okaka’s strong punches, the Tunisian began back-peddling with energised Okaka in pursuit. He was rattled by another dose of Okaka’s cracking right punch for two successive counts of eight. The referee then waved it off to save a well beaten Rafrafi from a possible disaster.

Jubilant Kenyans were in high spirits joined by boxers from other African countries to celebrate Okaka’s remarkable achievement.

In the course of this excitement, Botswana and Kenyan boxers nicknamed head coach Musa Benjamin the lGeneral for successfully plotting the downfall of the Tunisian.

“Right now I’m over the moon with Okaka’s historic victory and overall performance of our boxers,” a jovial General Musa told boxersworld.co.ke in an interview from Dubai.

“We have over the years put in countless hours, blood, sweat and sacrifice. We’re therefore very happy to see our efforts bear fruits through the good performance of our boxers.”

Musa was elated by Okaka’s authority in the ring.

“Okaka showed grit, heart, discipline, focus and made right adjustments, stuck to the plan and that’s how we stormed the quarterfinals in amateur boxing’s biggest and toughest competition. We hope to see Paul Omondi do the same today.”

As usual Okaka remained composed after demolishing the Tunisian boxer.

“First of all I thank God for what I’ve achieved and look forward to more victories,” said Okaka, adding:”I used my game plan in the first round plus what my corner had advised me to do. I’m happy all went according to plan, I’m very grateful to head coach Musa Benjamin our General.”

Kenya’s Paul Omondi is among the 19 African boxers in today’s round of 16 bouts taking on African Games featherweight silver medallist Armando Sigauque of Mozambique.

Cape Verde’s Olympic Games bronze medallist David Pina, African Games champion Patrick Chinyemba and three-times African champion Pita Kabeji of DR Congo take to the ring today with high hopes of victory.

Chinyemba is joined by compatriots, African Games silver medallists Mwengo Mwale and Emmabuel all with bright prospects of qualifying for the quarter-finals to make up for the defeat of their compatriot Andrew Chilata who was KO’d in the second round by Kazakhstan’s Serik Temirzhanov in the lightweight pre-quarters on Monday.

Africa heavyweight champion Karamba Kebe of Senegal gave a good account of himself against Cuba’s superstar Julio Cesar La Cruz who won by unanimous decision.

So far 82 African boxers have been eliminated from the competition with 22 still remaining in the race for major honours in Dubai.

The eagerly awaited pre-quarters showdown between Cuba’s multiple Olympic and world champion Julio Cesar La Cruz and Senegal’s Africa heavyweight champion Karamba Kebe is the highlight of today’s IBA Men’s World Championships round of 16.

Kebe, a silver and gold medallist in the 2023 and 2024 Africa Elite Championships, is unshaken by La Cruz’s credentials, and said he will take him as he comes.

Equally unshaken is Kebe’s coach Bole Gueye .”We’re fully prepared, physically and mentally,” Gueye told boxersworld.co.ke. “We know our opponent well, and we’ve already laid out our strategies. And we’re confident of victory, God willing. You know, boxing doesn’t stay in one place. We’ll have an opponent in front of us, and we have the solution.”

The fight is the talk of the town in Senegal’s capital city Dakar with boxing fans rooting for their French-based celebrity. The burly and well-fed Secretary-General of Senegal Boxing Federation Anta Gueye said La Cruz is not invincible.

“We can beat him, our boxer will make full use of his southpaw stance to confuse La Cruz,” Anta told boxersworld.co.ke in an interview from Dakar.

“We’re confident and believe our boxer Karamba has a chance to shine against La Cruz. Karamba is younger and fresher, although Cruz has more experience. Victory will go to the one who wants it most. Let’s hope it’s Karamba. It would be great if he could exploit Cruz’s strengths and score points in his weaknesses.”

Kebe is one of the 14 African boxers in action today in the opening day of the pre-quarters. It’s understood DR Congo’s Mayala Nsimba might not be available.

The chaff has been sorted out from the wheat with 32 African boxers qualifying for the round of 16 in the ongoing $8.32 IBA Men’s World Boxing Championships at the Dubai Tennis Stadium.

A total of 72 boxers from the 34 African countries represented in IBA’s flagship event have been eliminated. The battle is now getting intensive as the round of 16 bouts start today, December 8, 2025, with those dropping out in the quarter-finals assured of $10,000 in the new prize money structure introduced by the IBA which has made sure the coaches and NFs also get their share of the cake to ensure they stop salivating when they see their boxers earning millions of dollars yet they have also invested their time, knowledge and money in grooming the boxers. It’s a win-win situation.

The nine qualifiers to pre-quarters on Day Four action are Eswatini’s featherweight Mukelo Dlamini, Zambia’s light-welterweight Emmanuel Katema, Kenya’s newcomer featherweight Paul Omondi, Mozambizan hitman Tiago Muxanga at light-middleweight, Mauritius’ featherweight Niven Chemben, Libya’s light-welterweight Yazin Alhuwayi, South Africa’s two boxers, light-middleweight Blessing Nziyana and featherweight Masinulele Sigwela.

Zambia’s African Games champion Patrick Chinyemba and DR Congo’s three-time African champion are among the four boxers who received byes to the round of 16. Kabeji meets Spain’s Adrian Fresneda while Chinyemba takes on Moldova’s Ion Plinga, all bouts taking place on December 9. The other two are Mauritius’ Mandela Cup champion. Valerie Fabrice who meets Thailand’s flyweight Phanuwat Punnakorn and Cameroon’s cruiserweight Guillaume Fabrice pitted against Ecuador’s Marlo Javier. Today’s bout of the day in the pre-quarters is between Cuba’s multiple Olympic and world champion Julio Cesar La Cruz and Senegal’s Africa heavyweight champion Karamba Kebe.

Among the highlights on Day Four was Tiago Muxanga’s explosive encounter against Uzbekistan’s Shavkatjon Boltaev. A flurry of stinging combinations in the first round saw the Uzbek boxer receive a standing count. Boltaev came back strongly on the front foot in the second round sending down the Mozambican boxer on his knees for an eight count. The Uzbek boxer maintained his dominance. He would feint with his left and then release a right short uppercut to the chin of the tough Muxanga who stepped up pressure in the third round fought at a blistering pace with bombs exploding. The dominant Muxanga had the last laugh with 4-3 bout review verdict.

Kenyan rookie Paul Omondi surprised his handlers with his confidence and courageous display in his first appearance in the World Championships. At times he would even showboat as he contained the Libyan southpaw.

It appears Kenya’s head coach Musa Benjamin was not impressed by his complacency and must have told him my friend this is not a picnic be serious if you want the money.

Omondi came out charging like a wounded buffalo in the second round, subjecting the Libyan to two standing counts and a cut above the left eye.

Feeling the fierce onslaught from Omondi, the Libyan decided a bike will come in handy but still the Kenyan boxer was all over him and was docked points for holding it down. The Kenyan youngster punched the air in excitement when he was declared the winner on points.

Omondi’s compatriot and skipper of the Kenya team Boniface Mogunde paid dearly for wasting the first round doing more dancing than the serious business in the ring.

Mogunde, the reigning African light-middleweight champion, should have realised at times his outboxing approach can’t always work perfectly for him against some opponents. What he needed to do was to release the bees on his opponent Sarkhan Aliyev of Azerbaijan, a bronze medallist at the 2021 World Championships.

The Kenyan had an edge in the second round carrying the fight to his opponent. In the third he did the same but most of his punches did not land on target as his relaxed adversary connected more accurately with the few punches he released in the final round. He won by a 4-1 decision.

Kenya’s head coach Musa Benjamin had his reservations on the decision. He felt his boxer did more spadework to carry the day.

“Mogunde having watched previous fights of his experienced opponent, didn’t come out firing on all cylinders in the first round showing a bit more respect to the guy but he was in control in the second and third rounds,” Musa told boxersworld.co.ke

Musa was impressed by Paul Omondi’s gutsy display but not in the first round.

“Paul Omondi was a bit complacent in the first round giving the Libyan an edge.He was very comfortable with the pace so we now had to shift gears and in the 2nd round pressure fight stepping in with lots of punches,” said Musa.

“Some technical work is required. I’m happy for Paul who was too composed for a debutant. He followed instructions/plan to the letter. As for Caleb Wandera inexperience was a factor in his split loss to the Argentine whose southpaw stance complicated matters for him. Also, he was not able to find his range and rhythm. Additionally, he still needs some technical and tactical work. They have shown great promise otherwise.”
