FEMALE SOLDIERS LIFT NIGERIA IN AFRICA MILITARY GAMES BOXING:

Nigeria Defence Forces won the Africa Military Games Boxing tournament in Abuja on November 25, 2024.

The Nigerians scooped 12 gold, six silver and five bronze medals in total. The female soldiers played a key role in the victory collecting nine gold and three silvers. But, the male soldiers got three gold, three silver and five bronze medals.
Eight of the nine gold medals won by the Nigerian women came via walkovers with none of them fighting even once, an issue that sparked off a major controversy.
International Boxing Association (IBA) competition rules clearly state if a boxer has not fought in any competition he/she receives no medal. However, the Nigerians argued they were using military rules which they didn’t produce.
Algeria finished second 5-1-0 followed by Uganda 4-2-0, defending champions Kenya in fourth position 4-1-0 and fifth-placed Ghana 0-3-5.
Tunisia was sixth 0-2-2 with Libya and Mali in joint seventh position 0-1-0, Senegal ninth 0-0-3, Tanzania, South Africa and Burkina Faso joint tenth 0-0-2. Wooden spoonists Cape Verde and DR Congo returned home with one bronze each.
