Countdown to the final leg of the Kenya National Boxing League in Homabay, Dec 19-21

Faith Sabatia, still basking in the glory of her international debut in Kinshasa, is among the eight boxers picked for the final leg of BFK-sponsored Kenya National Boxing League at the Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay County, about 420km south-west of Kenya’s capital city, Nairobi.

Faith is one of the eight boxers – six men and two women – selected to represent Nairobi in Homa Bay from Thursday to Saturday.

She earned her first call-up to Kenya’s national team which participated in the AFBC African Men’s and Women’s Championships in Kinshasa, DR Congo, and lost to South Africa’s Mandela Cup silver medallist Dila Vuyolwethu who returned home with a bronze medal.

In addition to Faith, the other female boxer in the Nairobi team is welterweight Sylvia Obwamu.

The six male boxers in the team are minimumweight Emmanuel Chondo, flyweight Paul Omondi, lightweight Joseph Andulusi, light-welterweight Emmanuel Omolo and light-heavyweight Joseph Odhiambo.

With KDF already assured of the top spot, Nairobi – the Mecca of boxing in Kenya – is battling for the second position with defending champions Kenya Police who are reportedly unlikely to be in Homa Bay. Police have twice missed the league matches this year.

Nairobi and Police are lying second with 46 points.

The head coach of Nairobi John Ochieng “Chair” is confident they will finish ahead of Police.

“Raundi hii ni ngori, my boys are in top shape for Homa Bay, number two is ours,” said Ochieng.

Other coaches in the Nairobi team are Edward Ogweno and Nick Gitau while the owner of Umoja Boxing Gym Mike Mungai is the team manager.
