The ongoing Boxing Federation of Kenya (BFK) National Coaches, Referees and Judges Course in Mombasa has attracted a total of 75 participants.
Mombasa County Boxing Association (MCBA) Secretary-General Chrispine Onyango said of the 75 participants, 48 are attending the coaching course and 27 are in the referees and judges course.
“We’re very impressed with the attendance especially having three women in the coaching course and 12 in R&J,” said Onyango who, on behalf of BFK, initiated the Kenya-French boxing cooperation with the Director of Alliance Francaise Cultural Centre Lucas Melcor.
The course is taking place at the Alliance Francaise Cultural Centre in Nyali, Mombasa.
“It’s fully sponsored by the Alliance Francaise through the French Embassy, we’re grateful for their support sponsoring the course and donating boxing equipment,” said Onyango, the second Vice-President of BFK.
Kenya’s national boxing team head coach Musa Benjamin is the chief facilitator for the coaches course assisted by his deputy David Munuhe and CS John Waweru while BFK’s R&J Commission head Nelson Otieno is the chief facilitator for the R&J course assisted by international referee and judge Mwangi Muthoga aka Don King from Nakuru aka NaxVegas.
BFK’s affiliate, Mombasa County Boxing Association (MCBA), is hosting the weeklong course.
The boxing equipment, donated by the French Embassy, includes two rings, 150 pairs of gloves, gumshields and headguards.
Onyango said the official hand over of the equipment will take place on Saturday, June 21, at the Alliance Francaise. The Ambassador of France to Kenya, Arnaud Suquet, will be the chief guest. Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) Managing Director Captain William Ruto has also been invited. KPA has contributed a great deal in the development of boxing in the Coast Region, producing international boxers such as Martin “Nyoka” Ojuang and Wandera “Power” Oyolo.
