Thirty-two years of waiting are officially over.
Zimbabwean boxing has punched its way back onto the continental podium, courtesy of two rising stars who refused to back down at the Africa Elite Boxing Championships in Kinshasa.
Minimumweight Bellsing Sibanda and light-middleweight Christian Ndlovu have made history, capturing two hard-fought bronze medals and ending a drought that has lasted since 1994.
Sibanda showed incredible grit in the ring, only falling in the semi-finals to Botswana’s Molatlhegho Kobamelo, who went on to take the silver. Ndlovu put on a warrior’s display before being eliminated by local favorite Disasui Yenge of the DR Congo.
In a beautiful twist of fate, the man guiding them from the corner was the very same man who last tasted continental glory for Zimbabwe. National coach Alexander Kwangwari was one of three boxers to win bronze at the 1994 Championships in Johannesburg, alongside heavyweight Ezwell Ndlovu and the late light-heavyweight Daliso Lungu.
Thirty-two years ago, Kwangwari did it as a fighter at light-middleweight. Today, he masterminded it from the corner. Big up to Sibanda, Ndlovu, and Coach Kwangwari—the drought is broken, and Zim boxing is back!
