KINSHASA – The Democratic Republic of Congo has sent a clear and thunderous message to the rest of the continent, matching Morocco’s historic record by securing a staggering 18 boxers in the 2026 Africa Elite Boxing Championships finals.
The feat positions the host nation on the precipice of continental glory, setting up a thrilling quest for redemption on home soil.
At the 2024 edition of the championships in Kinshasa, Morocco ruled the ring, placing 18 boxers in the finals and emerging as overall winners with a haul of 10 gold, eight silver, and three bronze medals. DR Congo pushed them to the absolute limit back then, securing 14 finalists and capturing nine gold, five silver, and seven bronze medals for an impressive total of 21 medals.
Now, the tide is turning. Having matched Morocco’s entry record, the Congolese “Leopards”—spearheaded by their talismanic captain Pita Kabeji—have set their sights on a loftier target: completely shattering Morocco’s benchmark by conquering more than 10 gold medals.
