September 10, 2026
African boxers bounced back from a rocky start to guarantee the continent three medals at the ongoing Eurasian Daurian International Boxing Tournament in Chita, Russia.
Punching their way into the business end of the tournament, fighters from Zambia and Angola turned the tide on Day 3 after early casualties saw Angola’s lightweight Victor Tewase and Cameroon’s middleweight Wilfrid Aboudi exit via 5-0 defeats to Russian opponents, Andrey Kotusov and Magomed-Rasul Magomedov.
Zambian flyweight Daniel Mwanza opened the medal stream, securing a classic points victory over Russia’s Bogdan Dvali. Mwanza, who advanced directly to the semi-finals on a bye, now eyes the gold. He faces another local favorite, Nikita Lopatiev, in the finals on Saturday, September 12.
“I’m very excited to beat the Russian at home,” a jovial Mwanza said.
“Even that one in the finals, I’ll defeat him. I’m not scared of Russians.”
Mwanza trains out of the Exodus Academy in Lusaka under Ariel Banda, who was recently promoted to Technical Director by the Zambia Boxing Federation.
Compatriot Clement Zulu kept the momentum alive. The Evergreen Club bantamweight dismantled Kyrgyzstan’s southpaw Nursultan Duishenaliev in a flawless 5-0 points decision. Zulu advances to a tough semi-final clash against Russia’s Damir Tuychiev on Friday, September 11.
Angola’s middleweight Kelson Neto completed the trio of African victories. Neto dominated Belarus’ Dzianis Shyshlou with a 5-0 quarter-final win, securing his spot in the semi-finals and cementing a massive morale boost for the African contingent in Chita.
Neto will now take on Uzbekistan’s Alixan Shaxbazov in the semis while Zulu trades leather against Russia’s Damir Tuychiev.
