Africa got off to a bittersweet start at the Eurasia Daria Cup in Chita, Russia on September 8, 2026, as Angola’s lightweight Victor Tewase and South Africa’s light-welterweight Lukho Gijana stormed their way into the quarter-finals.
However, the continent’s campaign suffered a triple blow when Kenyan duo Juma Omondi (flyweight) and Phelix Ochieng (lightweight), alongside Tunisia’s bantamweight Montassar Hammami, all crashed out of the tournament.
Meanwhile, Libya’s contingent failed to show up at all, reportedly trapped by travel gridlocks before even reaching Russian soil.
In an all-African showdown, Tewase displayed clinical ring craft to outpoint Kenya’s Ochieng. South Africa’s Gijana followed suit, unleashing a heavy barrage to dominate Tunisia’s Fathi Guizani.
Earlier in the day, Kenyan debutant Juma Omondi gave the home crowd a massive scare. Facing the formidable Lochnev Arseny of Russia’s elite number-one team, Omondi survived Arseny’s onslaught in the opening two rounds before launching a ferocious final-round rally in the flyweight division.
While the judges ultimately handed the nod to the hometown favorite, the young Kenyan left the ring with his head held high after a thrilling performance which was the first time he was representing his country.
