Nine African nations have touched down in Chita, Russia, ready to trade blows at the third edition of the Eurasian Dauria Cup international youth boxing tournament.
Spurred on by South Africa’s historic gold medal in 2025, the continent is launching a massive campaign at this prestigious international youth tournament. The action for the 17-to-18-year-old prospects punches off on September 8.
The fighters have travelled deep into Russia. Chita sits a staggering 4,752 kilometers from Moscow. A bustling urban hub of roughly 340,000 residents, the city operates six hours ahead of East African time.
Tournament Media and Communications Manager Vladislav Dubrovskiy confirmed that all African delegations have safely arrived and settled into the city.
Africa’s presence has expanded drastically. In 2025, only five African nations made the trip. This year, nearly double the number of countries are hunting for podium finishes.
Initial reports counted 17 African fighters. Dubrovskiy, however, told boxersworld.co.ke that 18 boxers will actually take to the ring, supported by a 27-member delegation that includes nine elite coaches.
Angola leads the pack with a three-man fighting squad, while eight other nations have brought two prospects each. They are chasing the standard set last year by South Africa’s Ayabonga Meko, who stunned the field to capture the 57kg gold medal.
While powerhouse hosts Russia dominated the overall team standings last year, Africa’s reinforced army is ready to disrupt the status quo.
Since its inception in 2024 with 120 boxers from 16 countries, the Eurasian Dauria Cup has rapidly gained prestige. By 2025, participation spiked to 150 boxers from 19 countries. This third edition promises to be the most competitive yet.
