SAMIA WOMEN’S BOXING CHAMPIONSHIPS STARTS ON FRIDAY

The newly-introduced Samia Women’s Boxing Championships starts on Friday, January 31, at Kawe Beach Club, Dar es Salaam.

Boxing Federation of Tanzania (BFT) President Lukelo Willilo told boxersworld.co.ke this is a new tournament to honour Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu for her immense contribution to sports development in East Africa’s largest country.

Willilo said in addition to using the event to popularise women’s boxing in Tanzania, the tournament will be used to select the national team to participate in Women’s World Championships scheduled for Nis, Serbia from March 6-17 this year.

“The tournament is open to all amateur female and professional boxers affiliated to Tanzania Professiona Boxing Regulatory Commission,” said Willilo, adding: “We appeal to female boxers to register for this tournament in large numbers because we will also hold a seminar to educate them on life skills and reproductive health.”

This will be Tanzania’s second participation in the Women’s World Boxing Championships. The first time was last year in New Delhi, India.
